Box Score HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Crusaders won by double figures for the fourth time in three games as they took care of Thomas (Ga.) 14-0 at
Danny Owens Field.
The Crusaders wasted no time in getting the game up and running by scoring three identical goals in the opening 14 minutes. Through ball from the middle of the field, on running forward, right footed shot to the bottom right-hand corner. All three scored and assisted by three different players.
Karen Vilau,
Zalma Torres, &
Christina Salmon with the goals.
Livia Pertl, Salmon, & Torres with the assists.
Not two minutes later and
Virginia Mesa had put WCU up 4-0. Salmon picked up the ball on the right-hand side, drove towards the goal line, beating her defender, and squared the ball. The cross found Mesa a yard out from goal for one of the easiest goals she'll score this season.
Salmon turned provider again for Carey's fifth, this time winning a penalty. Salmon drove past her defender inside the box who had no choice but to bring her down, allowing Vilau to grab her second of the game from the spot.
Esalenna Galekhutle got in on the action as she grabbed the third straight goal to come from the right-hand side. An
Argentina Estrada through ball from deep found the on-running Galekhutle who drove towards goal and fired the ball across goal and scored off the post.
Valeria Barajas would claim the last goal of the half off a
Kokona Nishikawa deflection. Nishikawa rifled a shot from 20 yards out off the crossbar which bounced on the line and narrowly avoided being a goal itself. Barajas, the quickest to react, ran in and headed the rebound into the back of the net.
The rest of the half was spent going back and forth with both teams testing each other's goalkeepers.
Anita Gudmundsdottir was up to any challenge the Nighthawks tried to muster and kept them off the board.
Two minutes into the second half and Zalma claimed her second goal of the game and the pick of the bunch. Mesa drove down the Crusader left hand side and pulled the ball back to Nishikawa on the edge of the box. Without looking, Nishikawa then backheeled the ball into the path of Torres running behind her, who then took a touch and sent the ball flying into the top left corner.
The Crusaders wouldn't stop there as they went on to net another six goals before the final whistle. Vilau, Mesa, Galekhutle,
Lauren Jones & a
Lesley Vasquez brace completed the rout.
The Crusader backline held firm throughout as they limited the Night Hawks to shots from distances and half-chances. The Crusaders fielded all three of their keepers for a combined cleansheet. Gudmundsdottir,
Nerea Pallas Padilla, &
Marie Reinwald totaled two saves between them to keep Thomas off the scoreboard.
The Lady Crusaders are back in action on October 11
th as they travel to Marietta, Ga. to take on Life in SSAC action.
