HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey women's soccer team put together a dominant performance Saturday afternoon, defeating Thomas University 7-0 at Danny Owens Field.
The Lady Crusaders wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Just two minutes into the match,
Raquel Diaz threaded a pass through the defense to
Linda Mustered, who raced toward goal and buried a shot into the bottom corner to give Carey an early 1-0 lead.
One minute later, Mustered turned provider. After receiving the ball outside the penalty area,
Mia Encinia took a touch and fired a shot into the bottom corner, doubling the Lady Crusaders' advantage at 2-0.
William Carey continued to control possession throughout the first half, and the pressure paid off again before intermission. In the 31st minute,
Luana Falconeri delivered a perfectly timed cross into the box that found Paola Alvarez, who finished the opportunity to send Carey into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Crusaders came out of the break with the same intensity. Early in the second half, Falconeri collected a loose ball and played it to a wide-open Alvarez. The freshman drove into the penalty area and slipped her shot inside the far post for her second goal of the afternoon, extending the lead to 4-0.
Carey maintained control for much of the second half before erupting for three goals in the closing minutes. In the 85th minute, Mustered found the back of the net after her initial shot was deflected back into her path. Just one minute later,
Sophie Magee added to the tally, firing a shot past the diving goalkeeper.
The Lady Crusaders capped the scoring in the 88th minute when
Alba Aguado headed home a corner kick from
Boo Mills to complete the 7-0 victory.
William Carey returns to action Thursday, Sept. 17, when they travel to Mobile, Ala., to face the University of Mobile. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
