MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The William Carey Women's Tennis Team left little to doubt on their way to capturing their fourth SSAC Conference Tournament Title, defeating Loyola University 4-0, Saturday morning at Lagoon Park.
In doubles play, Loyola took the match at #1 doubles, but the Lady Crusaders battled back, taking the doubles point with tiebreaker wins at #2 and #3. In singles play, #1 singles saw 2023 SSAC Player of the Year
Jordan Ortega Mendez beat 2022 SSAC Player of the Year Lucy Carpenter 6-4, 6-4 to put Carey up 2-0.
Carey sealed the win with
Nina Westkamp defeating Elly Carpenter 6-1, 6-0 at #5 singles and
Sunny Logan defeating Avery Frierson 7-6, 6-4 at #6 singles.
Jordan Ortega Mendez was named Championship MVP after going 6-0 individually in the tournament.
Before the start of the championship the SSAC announced 2023 award winners and William Carey was well represented with
Jordan Ortega Mendez being named SSAC Newcomer of the Year and Player of the Year along with being selected to the All-Conference Team.
Also earning All-Conference honors were
Sunny Logan,
Tiffany Chang, and Malak Aberkane. The Barnes & Noble College All-Academic Team was also announced with
Nina Westkamp, Mendez, and Victoria Vieten being selected.
With the conference title the Lady Crusaders earn an automatic bid to the 42
nd Annual Women's Tennis National Championships held May 16-20, at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
