MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The William Carey Women's Tennis advanced to the championship match of the 2023 SSAC Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 victory over Dillard University and a thrilling 4-3 win over #1 seed Middle Georgia State Friday afternoon.
In their first match of the day against Dillard, the Lady Crusaders wasted no time in seizing control of the match. WCU secured the first point of the match winning at #1 & #3 doubles.
Nina Westkamp made it 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 win at #5 singles. Carey sealed the win with
Malak Abarkane winning 6-1, 7-6 at #4 singles and
Jordan Ortega Mendez winning 6-2, 6-1#1 singles.
In the semifinal match against MGA, both teams went back and forth with the Lady Crusaders taking the first point at doubles. Both teams traded points in singles with Carey getting wins from Mendez 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 at #1 singles,
Tiffany Chang 7-5, 6-3 at #3 singles but the Knights would take #2, 4, & 5 to even the match at three all.
The match would be decided between
Sunny Logan (WCU) and Paula Rodriguez (MGA) at #6 singles. Logan would take the first set 6-3 but Rodriguez bounced back to force the deciding third set with a 6-3 win in the second set. Logan left little to doubt taking the set 6-3 for the win.
The Lady Crusaders are back in action tomorrow as they take on Loyola University. First serve is slated for 10:00 am at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala.
