WCU Track & Field Performs Well in Indoor Opener

12/2/2023 12:22:00 PM

The Crusaders opened their season in a stellar fashion. As the Crusaders had 8 individual athletes achieve the National Championship Qualifying Standards.

The women's 60 meters race was the highlight of the competition. Lead by our very own Joy Abu! Abu finished with the overall top performance in the 60m (7.43) and she was also accompanied by a host of her teammates. Machaeda Linton (7.54) had the 2nd best time. Followed by Fredricka McKenzie (7.57), Tyeese Smith (7.59), and freshman Zhaira Bonner (7.81).

Other Crusaders that performed at a National qualifying level in their events were Salieci Myles (200m), Linton (Long Jump), Carson Barlow (3000m), and Daena Dryer (Triple Jump). The Crusaders also had several Personal Best Performances from a number of athletes.

"We will be looking to build upon the bar that we've set at this point," said Head Coach Ryan McKenzie.  "On the women side we know that we're fast and we know we can jump, as we finished as the number 1 sprint & triple/long jump team in the Nation last year. Now the goal is to keep doing what we do best plus add some support from other events as well. Track & Field is not your average team sport. You have a ton of individual events competing to collectively rank as a team. So our main focus is to keep our athletes healthy, keep them competitive individually, and focused on the word "TEAM!"  We had a great opener, yet we have a lot of work to do!"
