HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over LSU Alexandria in its home opener Thursday night at Danny Owens Field.
The Lady Crusaders controlled possession throughout the opening half, outshooting the Generals 8-3 over the first 45 minutes. Despite creating several scoring opportunities, Carey was unable to find the breakthrough, and the match remained scoreless at halftime.
LSUA produced its best chance of the night just minutes into the second half, but
Alicia Garwood stepped in to intercept a dangerous cross and preserve the deadlock. From there, the Lady Crusaders regained control and continued to apply pressure in the attacking third.
That pressure finally paid off in the 77th minute.
Maddie Davis collected a loose ball and played it forward to
Luana Falconeri, who quickly sent a pass wide to
Avery Rogers. Rogers drove toward the corner before exchanging passes with
Livia Pertl and delivering a pinpoint cross into the box. Waiting inside the six-yard area was
Paloma Paris, who headed the ball home for the match's lone goal and a 1-0 Carey lead.
The Lady Crusaders held firm defensively over the final minutes to secure the victory.
WCU returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 6, when it travels to Decatur, Ala., for a neutral-site matchup against Lindsey Wilson College. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
