Crusaders and Generals Fight to 1-1 Draw

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey men's soccer team battled LSU Alexandria to a 1-1 draw Friday night at Danny Owens Field.

LSU Alexandria generated the first scoring opportunity of the match, using a quick give-and-go to create a one-on-one chance. However, the Crusader defense recovered quickly and forced an errant cross to end the threat. The Generals followed with a dangerous free kick, but Carey once again stood firm defensively to keep the match scoreless.

The Crusaders responded in the 19th minute when Kenson Pierre found Souleymane Balde in space. Balde took a touch and fired an attempt toward goal, but his shot sailed high. Both teams continued searching for chances throughout the remainder of the opening half, but neither side was able to break through, sending the match into halftime tied 0-0.

Following the break, both teams created early opportunities, but as was the case in the first half, neither could find the back of the net. The deadlock finally ended in the 71st minute when Carey capitalized on a set piece. Off a short corner, the ball was played into the six-yard box, where Teddy Miranda met it with a low header that slipped just inside the post to give the Crusaders a 1-0 advantage.

LSU Alexandria answered six minutes later after being awarded a penalty kick following a handball in the box. The Generals converted from the spot to level the match at 1-1.

The final minutes featured a back-and-forth battle as both teams pushed for a winner, but neither side could capitalize, resulting in the draw.

William Carey returns to action Thursday, Sept. 10, when the Crusaders open conference play against Brewton-Parker. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Danny Owens Field.
