HATTIESBURG, Miss. – It was all William Carey from the opening whistle as the Crusaders cruised to a 12-0 victory over Brewton-Parker on Thursday night at Danny Owens Field.
Carey struck early when
Fernando Pirry beat the Barons' goalkeeper to a loose ball and quickly delivered a cross to
Isaiah Harvey, who calmly finished into an open net to give the Crusaders the lead. WCU doubled its advantage in the 21st minute when
Pedro Sao Tiago appeared to send a shot toward goal, but instead delivered a perfectly placed pass to
Daniel Mulero, who redirected the ball past the charging keeper.
Mulero struck again in the 31st minute, heading home a brilliant service from
Enzo Galli. Just one minute later,
Souleymane Balde found Gabriel Hernandez, who made it 4-0. The Crusaders continued to pour on the pressure, and in the 34th minute
Fabian Arroyo slipped behind the Brewton-Parker defense and found the back of the net, sending Carey into halftime with a commanding 5-0 lead.
The second half followed a similar script as the Crusaders maintained complete control. Less than a minute after the restart,
Josef Wilson intercepted a Brewton-Parker pass near midfield and quickly played the ball forward to
Jean Danitanga. Danitanga turned and spotted Hernandez open in the attacking third. Hernandez took the pass in stride and blasted a shot past the goalkeeper to extend the lead to 6-0.
After a brief scoring lull, Pirry reignited the offense in the 71st minute. Following a steal by
George Steers, Pirry dribbled around a defender and calmly slotted the ball into the net for Carey's seventh goal of the match. Three minutes later, Steers added his name to the scoresheet, slipping behind the defense to tap in a cross from
Luka Brandic.
The floodgates fully opened from there. Brandic scored in the 79th minute, while Brandic added the final goal in the 85th minute. Pirry completed his hat trick in the 84th minute as the Crusaders rolled to the 12-0 victory.
William Carey returns to action Saturday as it continues conference play against Thomas University. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Danny Owens Field.
