MARIETTA, Ga. – The William Carey men's soccer team came up short in a hard-fought road battle Friday night, falling 1-0 to No. 7 Life University.
Scoring opportunities were scarce throughout the first half, as the teams combined for just two shots on goal. Life generated the game's first threat when Andrei Apostu put a shot on frame, but William Carey goalkeeper
Yago Darub made the save to keep the Running Eagles off the scoreboard.
The Crusaders responded with their lone shot on target of the opening period when
Fernando Pirry challenged Life goalkeeper Pawel Wolny, who came up with the stop. Both defenses continued to hold firm the remainder of the half, sending the match into the break scoreless.
The second half featured increased offensive pressure, but quality chances remained limited. Life eventually broke through in the 68th minute, capitalizing on an opening in the Carey defense to score what would prove to be the match's lone goal.
William Carey continued to push forward in search of an equalizer and created several dangerous opportunities down the stretch. However, the Crusaders were unable to find a breakthrough against the Life back line as the Running Eagles held on for the 1-0 victory.
The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, Sept. 27, when they travel to Dalton, Ga., to face Dalton State College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
