MARIETTA, Ga. – The William Carey women's soccer team picked up a big conference road win Friday afternoon, knocking off No. 10 Life University 3-1 in Southern States Athletic Conference action.
The Lady Crusaders struck early and never looked back, scoring twice in the opening eight minutes before adding an insurance goal in the second half to earn the road conference victory.
William Carey (WCU) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. In the third minute,
Boo Mills delivered a corner kick to the back post, where
Alba Aguado rose above the defense and headed home the opening goal for a 1-0 lead.
Just five minutes later, the Lady Crusaders doubled their advantage. Goalkeeper
Alicia Garwood sent a punt deep into the attacking third, finding
Paola Alvarez behind the Running Eagle defense. Alvarez capitalized on the opportunity and finished the scoring chance to put Carey ahead 2-0.
Life University responded in the 31st minute, converting a penalty kick to cut the deficit to 2-1. Both defenses tightened up for the remainder of the half, with neither side able to generate a significant scoring opportunity as the Lady Crusaders carried their one-goal advantage into the break.
The defensive battle continued throughout much of the second half before Carey delivered the decisive blow in the 65th minute. Once again, Mills provided the service on a corner kick, placing the ball perfectly at the back post.
Susan De Souza Santos met the cross with a header, extending the Lady Crusader lead to 3-1.
The William Carey defense took control from there, limiting the Running Eagles to just one shot over the final 25 minutes to secure the road victory.
William Carey returns to action Sunday, Sept. 27, when it travels to Dalton, Ga., to face Dalton State College. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
