HATTIESBURG, Miss. – William Carey secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Thomas University on Saturday afternoon at Danny Owens Field.
The Crusaders controlled much of the action in the opening half, outshooting the Night Hawks 15-1. Despite generating plenty of chances, Carey was unable to break through, as the Thomas goalkeeper made four saves to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with the Crusaders continuing to apply pressure in the attacking third while the Night Hawks' defense worked to keep them off the scoreboard. Carey finally found the breakthrough in the 54th minute when
Luka Brandic served a ball into the box that connected with
Fernando Pirry. Pirry directed a low header into the net, providing what proved to be the game's lone goal.
William Carey continued to press forward in search of an insurance goal, but the Thomas goalkeeper remained up to the task, turning away several more scoring opportunities. Defensively, the Crusaders were just as impressive, limiting the Night Hawks to two shots on target.
Pablo Diez made the necessary saves to preserve the shutout and secure the victory.
William Carey returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 17, when they travel to Mobile, Ala., to face the University of Mobile. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
