HATTIESBURG, Miss. - William Carey University hosted the USA Archery MS South-Central Collegiate Regional from April 10 to 12, bringing together some of the top collegiate archery talent in the region.
In collegiate archery, recurve athletes compete at 70 meters, while compound, fixed pins and barebow divisions shoot at 50 meters.
Â
One of the most unforgettable moments of the tournament took place during the women's recurve semifinals, where a spot in the gold medal match was on the line. In a high-pressure setting, two shoot-offs unfolded simultaneously, intensifying the atmosphere for both athletes and spectators.
Â
In one of these tiebreakers,
Valentina Villamizar secured her place in the final by shooting a 9 against her opponent's 7.
Â
However, in the other shoot-off, the unexpected happened. Anahí Ponce, a recurve archer for the Crusaders, advanced to the final with a flawless tiebreak shot. Her opponent, Hadley Spreng from the University of Montevallo, shot first, landing her arrow just one inch from the exact center—a shot that seemed incredibly difficult to beat.
Â
With all eyes on her and the crowd holding its breath, Ponce stepped up and delivered perfection: an arrow dead center. Her precision not only secured her place in the final but also created one of the most remarkable moments of the competition.
