HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey men's soccer team turned in a dominant performance Tuesday afternoon, defeating United States Sports University 7-0 at Danny Owens Field.
The Crusaders wasted little time establishing control, finding the back of the net just one minute into the match.
Jean Danitanga opened the scoring by slipping a shot past the Eagle goalkeeper to put William Carey ahead 1-0.
Despite a more organized defensive effort from USSU following the early goal, Carey continued to dictate possession and create opportunities throughout the opening half.
The Crusaders doubled their advantage in the 17th minute when
Marco Lopez delivered a corner kick to the back post, where
Kenson Pierre finished with a one-touch strike. Just two minutes later, Pierre turned provider, threading a pass through the Eagle defense to
Fernando Pirry, who buried the chance to make it 3-0.
William Carey continued its relentless attack and added a fourth goal in the 39th minute.
Enzo Galli sent a perfectly weighted cross into the box, and
Daniel Mulero slid in to tap home the finish.
The Crusaders were not finished before halftime. Pirry struck again in the 44th minute, recording his second goal of the day and sending Carey into the break with a commanding 5-0 lead.
William Carey picked up where it left off in the second half, maintaining possession and limiting any offensive opportunities for the Eagles. The Crusaders continued to generate chances and were rewarded in the 67th minute when sustained pressure forced an own goal, stretching the lead to 6-0.
Isaiah Harvey capped the scoring in the 81st minute, finding the net to secure the 7-0 final margin.
The Crusader defense was equally impressive, posting a shutout while holding the Eagles to no shots on goal.
William Carey returns to Southern States Athletic Conference action on Saturday, Oct. 24, when it hosts Xavier University at Danny Owens Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
