HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey men's soccer team secured a pivotal conference win Saturday afternoon, defeating Xavier University of Louisiana 4-1 at Danny Owens Field.
The opening half was defined by strong defensive play from both sides as offensive opportunities were limited throughout the first 40 minutes. Each team managed just one shot on goal before the Crusaders broke through late in the half.
In the 40th minute,
Fabian Arroyo delivered a perfectly placed corner kick to the back post, where
Kenson Pierre rose above the defense and headed the ball into the net to give William Carey a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The Crusaders carried that momentum into the second half and quickly extended their lead.
Just minutes after the restart,
Souleymane Balde played a perfectly weighted ball into the attacking third that found
Fernando Pirry in stride. Pirry took one touch before burying his shot in the back of the net to double the William Carey advantage.
Two minutes later,
Josef Wilson and Pirry combined to set up Balde at the top of the box. Balde quickly finished the opportunity to push the Crusaders' lead to 3-0.
Xavier continued to apply pressure offensively and found a breakthrough in the 76th minute when Antonio Merola slipped behind the Carey defense and scored to trim the deficit to 3-1.
William Carey responded immediately. Pirry beat the Xavier back line and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but his initial attempt was turned away. The rebound, however, fell directly to Balde, who calmly finished, restoring the Crusaders' three-goal lead at 4-1.
The William Carey defense shut down any remaining Xavier chances over the final minutes to secure the conference victory.
The Crusaders return to action Monday, Oct. 26, when they close out the regular season against Andrew College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Danny Owens Field.
