HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Men's Basketball Team dropped a thrilling SSAC match-up against the University of Mobile 75-73 Thursday night at Clinton Gym.
"Another classic ball game between two good teams but we fell just short," said Head Coach
Steve Knight. We executed the last play to perfection and just missed the shot. We need to bounce back on Saturday at Loyola."
The opening minutes of the game saw both teams going back and forth but with Mobile leading 6-5 after four minutes of play, the Rams used a 7-2 run to take a six-point lead with under thirteen minutes remaining.
The Crusaders slowed the run and over the next four minutes fought their way back to tie the game at 17 on a
Jamar Jenkins layup. The back and forth continued from there and like before with the Rams leading 19-18 it was the Crusaders though that pulled out to a five-point lead on a 7-3 run with seven minutes left in the half.
From there, Carey would go on to take a 31-23 lead with four minutes left but Mobile slowed the run like the Crusaders did earlier, with the offense picking up momentum, closing the half on a 17-6 run to take a three-point lead into the break.
Coming out of the break, the Rams stretched their lead to seven on multiple occasions with the last coming with under sixteen to play at 48-41. The Crusaders again though slowed the run and battled their way back to tie the game at 50 on a
Ankerion Gross layup with twelve minutes remaining.
The next ten minutes saw eleven lead changes and seven ties. With the game tied at 69, it looked like Mobile had taken control, scoring four straight points but Carey responded with four straight points of their own by
Cam Brown and
Dylan Brumfield to tie the game once again with one minute to play.
The Carey defense held strong on the Rams next possession forcing the go ahead shot to miss its mark to give the Crusaders the ball with under a minutes on the clock. Just as the Carey defense held strong so did the Mobile defense, as they forced a turnover, leaving enough time for one last shot.
With time winding down, BJ Comer drove the lane, drawing a foul with just under two second on the clock to send him to the free throw line for what would be the game winning attempts. With just enough time remaining for one shot, Brumfield collected the inbound pass at mid-court and after a quick pass, Brown took aim with the potential game winning three. However, the shot hit off the left of the rim to end the game.
Dylan Brumfield led the offense with 15 points with
Jamar Jenkins finishing with 13 points.
Cam Brown added 12 points while
Zandon Haralson had 10 points.
Carey is back in action Saturday, February 22, as they wrap up the regular season against Loyola University. Play is set to begin at 2:00 pm at the Den in New Orleans, La.
