Lady Crusaders Claim SSAC Regular Season Title

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – For the ninth time the Lady Crusaders claimed the SSAC Regular Season Title with a 4-1 win over Faulkner University Thursday night.

It was all Carey from the start. Just six minutes into the contest WCU had a goal on the board thanks to Virginia Mesa. Argentina Estrada drove the ball towards the goal before tapping the ball to her right for Lauren Entremont. Entremont drove up the right side of the 18-yard box towards the end line giving the ball a flick across the goal for Mesa for the easy tap in.

The Lady Crusaders were rolling and it didn't take long for them to extend their lead. Kokono Nishakowa beat her defender in the middle then played a through ball to Karen Vilau. Vilau then made two quick strides towards goal, depositing her attempt in the bottom right corner of the goal to make it 2-0 WCU.

After 25 minutes it was 3-0 Carey. Mesa found herself with the ball near midfield before turning and finding a wide-open Estrada streaking up the right side. Estrada drove into the box and like the first goal crossed the ball in front of the goal for Aylssa Navaro for easy finish.

The final goal of the half came from Boo Mills. Mills played a nice interchange with Mesa before receiving the ball back. She then drove up the far side firing to the bottom right of the goal to make it 4-0 lead.

The rest of the half saw the Lady Crusaders control possession creating multiple chances to extend their lead but unable to find the back of the net.

Faulkner's best look of the first half came with nine minutes left on the clock. Oluwatomisin Eludipo drove up the right side of the field, dribbling around the Carey defense for a clean pass to the middle of box for Zykira Marbury. However, Marbury could not make clean contact sending the attempt wide of the goal.

The second half did not have the same offensive show as the first from the Lady Crusaders and despite outshooting Faulkner 5-1 in the second half it was the Eagles that found the back of the net. In the 62ndminute, Eladeepo collected a loose ball in front of the box and after missing the ball on her first attempt from 18 yards out, fired again this time sending the ball into the bottom left corner for what would be the only goal of the half.

WCU is back in action Saturday, October 25, as they head to West Point, Ga. to take on Point University in their final regular season contest. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:30 pm.
