WEST POINT, Ga. – #2 William Carey wrapped up their regular season with a 2-0 win over Point University Saturday afternoon.
"We played some really nice stuff today," said Head Coach
Danny Owens. "Thought we left a few goals out there but overall, I was very pleased with our performance."
It was all Carey from the start. Just two minutes into the contest,
Raquel Diaz staked WCU to a 1-0 lead. Diaz collected a loose ball in the middle of the field, dribbled towards the goal and from 25 yards fired towards the top right corner. Skyhawk keeper Lisa Kelm dove getting her hand to the ball, but not enough to deflect the shot off its mark.
Over the next 13 minutes, Carey had three more chances to extend their lead but were unable to find the back of the net. In the 16th minute,
Virginia Mesa played a through ball from outside the 18-yard box to a wide open
Alessia Navarro and with one touch put the Lady Crusaders ahead 2-0. WCU maintained control of the ball for the rest of the half, taking eight more shots with six being on target.
The second half went the same way as the first half, just minus the goals. Carey continued to control the game, taking seven shots with three on frame but again unable to find the back of the net. The WCU defense was stellar, allowing one shot for the game that sailed left of the goal.
The Lady Crusaders are back in action Thursday, October 30, as they take on Faulkner University in the quarterfinals of the SSAC Championship. Play is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm at
Danny Owens Field.
