Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Crusaders Roll Past Middle Georgia State

COCHRAN, Ga. – The William Carey Women's Basketball Team wrapped up their Georgia road trip with a 77-62 victory over Middle Georgia State Monday afternoon at Morris Gymnasium.

"We are happy with the road win," said Head Coach Tracy English. "It's never easy at Middle, and it was hard for us to find a rhythm today. We got the "W" and I'm proud of our team's effort."

The Lady Crusaders got off to a good start, building an early 10-2 lead midway through the first quarter. The Knights settled in on the offensive side and over a two-minute span battled their way back to within two points on an 8-2 run.

Mckalea Randall halted the run with a quick steal and layup under the basket. Randall followed that with another steal leading to a pair of free throws where she converted one of the two attempts with Shaneal Corpuz making it 17-10 Carey on a jumper with over two minutes remaining. The final minutes of the quarter saw both teams exchange baskets with WCU taking a 21-15 lead into the second quarter.

The Carey defense was on full display in the second quarter, as they held MGA to just three field goals and for over eight minutes without a basket, allowing them to build a 32-20 lead before taking a 36-26 lead into the break.

Things went back and forth out of the break, but with Carey leading 41-30, a Kolten Blakeney jumper with seven minutes left sparked a 13-3 run over a four-minute span. The final minutes saw WCU push their lead to as many as 22 points before taking a 60-40 lead into the final quarter of play.

It was much of the same in the fourth quarter, as the Lady Crusaders put the game away, extending their lead to as many as 24 points on their way to victory. For the game, Carey shot 44% from the floor along with outscoring the Knights 25-7 on points off turnovers. The WCU defense was instrumental in that differential, forcing 21 turnovers with thirteen of those coming off steals.

Shaneal Corpus led the way offensively with 18 points and eight rebounds. Kolten Blakeney added 16 points while Mckalea Randall finished with a season high of ten points.

Carey is back in action Thursday, January 30, they return home to take on Life University. Play is set to begin at 5:30 pm at Clinton Gym.
