Lady Crusaders Suffer First Regular Season Loss in Two Years

FOLEY, Ala. – On a wet Friday evening at the OWA Sports Tourism Complex, the Seahawks would hand the Crusaders their first regular season loss nearly 2 years to the day.

In what would be a back-and-forth game, it was Keiser who would strike first, and early. In the 7th minute, Keiser would float a free kick into the back post from Carey's left-hand side. Keiser's Lauren Riley would rise highest to head the cross straight at Carey keeper Anita Gudmundsdottir to make the save. Unfortunately, the save would fall straight at the feet of Keiser's Maria Vilhena to tap into the net.

The Crusaders looked to respond immediately and would have the ball in the back of the Seahawks net. After a lengthy stoppage due to an injury to the Keiser keeper, the referee would award a dubious foul on the keeper and disallow the Crusader effort, leaving the game 1-0 to Keiser.

The Seahawks would immediately swoop on some defensive errors to double their lead in the 19th minute. Keiser's Alicia Ray would take advantage of a poor clearance and slot the ball well into Gudmundsdottir's bottom left hand corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Not 4 minutes later and the Crusaders would put themselves on the board with a goal of their own. A Zalma Torres Pass found Esalenna Galekhutle 25 yards out from goal. Galekhutle would let fly on a low drive that would find the bottom left corner of the Seahawks goal. Carey had a way back into the game and would go on the hunt for an equalizer.

The remainder of the first half would be a back-and-forth affair as Carey went in search of an equalizer, and Keiser in search of re-doubling their lead. Fouls and chances on both sides would all lead to nothing as the half would finish 2-1 to the Seahawks.

The second half would replicate the first in terms of the run of play, but not in terms of the goals. An end-to-end second half of chances and fouls for both teams made for an entertaining second period of play.
20 minutes into the second half and the Crusaders would have another goal disallowed for a foul on the Keiser keeper. A Rocio Fernandez corner would lead to a goal mouth scramble, eventually falling at the feet of Karen Vilau who would pass the ball into the net from 12 yards out. The referee would again deem there was a foul on the Keiser keeper in the lead up to the goal and award a free kick to the Seahawks.

The remainder of the half would follow suit to the previous 70 minutes. Corners, fouls, and near chances for both teams but nothing coming of any of it. The game would eventually fizzle out and end in a 2-1 defeat for the Crusaders.

William Carey are back in action as they take on Southeastern (Fla.) on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 PM at the OWA Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala.
