Gluttony of Goals Put Out Fire

FOLEY, Ala. – The Lady Crusader offense shone brighter than the Foley sun as they hit #20 Southeastern for 9 unanswered.

The Crusaders got themselves off to a flying start as they opened the scoring in the 9th minute. Alyssia Davis picked the ball up on the right-hand side in the attacking third and used her pace to beat her defender. Davis drove towards the byline and crossed the ball across the 6-yard box for Karen Vilau to tap in in the middle of the goal.

Not a minute a later and Carey had doubled their lead, this time courtesy of Christina Salmon. Esalenna Galekhutle received the ball 25 yards out from goal and provided a delightful scoop over the back line for Salmon to run onto and finish across the keeper into the bottom right-hand corner.

15 mintues, 3-0 Crusaders. Salmon found herself on the score sheet for the second time in 5 minutes as she ran onto a deep through ball from Argentina Estrada. Salmon would hold off the pressure from the recovering defender and finish low and hard across the keeper for a well taken finish.

Carey had the chance to extend their lead to four in the first half however Karen Vilau was unable to convert her penalty. Vilau was brought down inside the box after beating two defenders but could not take advantage of the resulting penalty.

The remainder of the half would see Carey control possession and field position. Southeastern would begin to muster some offense in the closing few minutes, hitting the crossbar after a smart turn and shot on the edge of the box from the Fire forward.

Southeastern came out with a point to prove in the opening few minutes of the second half. The Fire would go on the offensive and take the game to the Crusaders. Despite several shots, a goal mouth scramble in the Carey penalty area, and a disallowed goal for Southeastern, it was the Crusaders who would get the next goal. Salmon would complete her hat trick in the 51st minute as she would tackle the Southeastern defender inside the penalty area before rocketing a shot into the far corner.
Two goals in 60 seconds would extend the Crusader lead to six as Meghan Romines would get her name on the score sheet and Salmon would net her fourth. Galekhutle picked up a loose ball in the middle of the field, beat a defender, and slipped a through ball for Salmon to run onto who coolly slotted the ball passed the onrushing Fire keeper. Romines then followed up her own saved shot to slot the ball into the net to make it six.

Karen Vilau got the opportunity to avenge her missed spotkick from the first half as she converted one in the second. A shove in the back of Kokona Nishikawa allowed Vilau to power the ball to the right of the Fire keeper.

Valeria Barajas would complete the rout with a brace in the closing 25 minutes. The first a simple tap in after following in a saved shot from Davies. The second, a fantastic touch from a Vilau long ball before turning and rifling the ball into the back of the net.

The Crusaders defense would hold firm for the 90 minutes, blocking several shots and snuffing out any offense the Fire would try to conjure. Anita Gudmundsdottir and Nerea Pallas Padilla kept a clean sheet in the goal, recording 6 saves between them.
