Lady Crusader Blow Past Brewton-Parker

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Women's Soccer Team controlled the match from start to finish, as they defeated Brewton-Parker College 17-0, Saturday afternoon at Danny Owens Field.

The Lady Crusaders wasted no time in establishing control of the game, as Rocio Fernandez crossed the ball from the left side of the 18-yard box to an open Alyssia Davis who put Carey up 1-0 in the opening minute of the game. Three minutes later Karen Vilau chipped the ball over the Brewton-Parker defense to Zalma Torres who deposited the ball into the top right corner of the goal.

WCU kept up the attack and in the seventh minute, Christina Salmon dribbled through the Baron defense to make it 3-0. Two minutes later Fernandez collected a loose ball that was partially cleared by the BPC defense off a Vilau corner to extend the Lady Crusader lead. WCU continued to add to their lead, as Salmon picked up her second goal of the match, as she took as pass from Vilau and curls the shot around the BPC keeper.

WCU extended their lead to six when Esalenna Galekhutle buried a shot into the bottom left corner in the 15th minute and in the 21st minute Salmon earned herself a hattrick to make it a seven-goal lead. In the 23rd minute, Virginia Mesa steps onto the pitch and immediately contributes, playing the ball forward to Davis who beats the Baron defender and fires home a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal. Mesa also contributed on the final goal of the half, sending the ball forward to Valeria Barajas who then dribbled around the BPC keeper to make it 9-0 heading into the break.

The Carey offense continued to fire on all cylinders coming out of the break with Mesa adding a goal to her sheet just three minutes into the second half. There was a little break in the scoring until Vilau got in on the scoring with a goal in the 60th minute. Vilau picked up her second goal of the match three minutes later, on a penalty kick with Salmon adding her fourth goal of the match in the 66th minute.

Salmon extended the Lady Crusaders lead to fourteen with her fifth goal of the day on a PK in the 69th minute and Galekhutle made it 15-0 less than two minutes with her second goal of the contest. Alyssia Davis picked up the hattrick with a goal in the 72nd minute with Barajas adding the final goal of the match in the 78th minute.

Brewton-Parker's best chance which was also their only chance came in the 53rd minute, as Marielys Rosales beat the Carey defender to setup a one on one with the keeper. However, Nerea Pallas kept the Barons off the board with a diving save.
