Lady Crusaders Fall to Mobile

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – In an intense matchup between unbeaten conference opponents the William Carey Volleyball Team fell to the University of Mobile (UM) 3-1 Friday night at the Ben Waddle Complex.

The Lady Crusaders got off to dreadful start in the first set, allowing the Rams to jump out to a 7-0 advantage. WCU managed to halt the run and cut the deficit to three with a 4-0 run but could get no closer, as Mobile eventually pulled away to take the set 25-14.

The second set saw UM take the early lead at 8-4, but Carey battled back to tie the set at eight all. From there both teams went back and forth with neither of them leading by more than two points. With the score tied at 23, the Lady Crusaders got a huge kill from Sofia Bettini followed by an ace from Marcella Hermont to clinch the set 25-23.

Mobile once again took the early lead in the third set building a 9-4 lead and just like the other sets WCU battled their way back to cut the deficit to just two at 12-10. From there Carey continued to fight, staying within striking distance, eventually tying the set at 24 all. However, the Rams picked up back-to-back kills to take the set and a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Crusaders did not back down and came out swinging in the fourth set opening on a 7-2 run. However, Mobile would not go quietly, as they fought their way back to tie the set and then take lead at 16-15. Once again, the battle was on with both teams trading shots. With the set tied at 19 all, the Rams made their move, closing the set on a 5-3 run to take the set and the match.

Suelen Lima led the attack with 14 kills while Marcella Hermont and Elaina Anderson each finished with 10 kills. Evelyn Araujo finished the match with 20 digs while Katarina Vulic had 41 assists.

Carey is back in action tomorrow, as they take on Faulkner University in SSAC action. Play is set to get underway at 1:00 pm at the Ben Waddle Complex.
