WCU Volleyball Comes up Short Against Faulkner

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Volleyball dropped their second conference match in a row, falling to Faulkner University 3-2, Saturday afternoon at the Ben Waddle Complex.

Things were close in the first set, as neither team led by more than three points until Faulkner took a 19-15 lead behind three straight errors late in the set. From there the Eagles closed the set on a 6-3 run to take the 1-0 lead.

Faulkner carried the momentum over into the second set, opening on a 5-1 run. However, Carey regrouped and battled their way back to take an 8-7 lead. From there both teams took turns with lead. With the set tied at sixteen all, it looked as if the Eagles seized control of the set behind a 5-0 run, but the Lady Crusaders stormed back with a 4-0 run of their own to get within one point. However, Faulkner answered, closing the set on a 4-1 run to take the 2-0 lead.

Carey shook off the tough second set loss and opened the third set on a 13-1 run and never looked back, taking the set 25-10 to stay alive. The fourth set returned the back-and-forth action with Carey maintaining the early lead. With WCU holding a slim 9-8 lead, they seized control of the set behind a 9-1 run that saw five of the points come off kills before going on to take the set 25-14 to force the deciding fifth set.

The battle continued in the fifth set with the Lady Crusaders slowly building a 12-9 lead. However, Faulkner battled their way back, to tie the set at thirteen all before picking up the final two points to take the set and the victory.

Suelen Lima led four Lady Crusaders in double digit kills with 18 while picking up 16 digs.  Sofia Bettini had 12 kills with Marcella Hermont and Elaina Anderson each having 10 kills.  Katarina Vulic finished the match with 51 assists.

Carey returns to the court on Saturday, September 28, as they head to New Orleans, La. to take on Loyola University. Play is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
