DECATUR, Ala. – On a wet Sunday evening, the William Carey Women's Soccer Team found their footing to defeat Lindsey Wilson 3-1 at Jack Allen's Soccer Complex.
In the opening minutes of play the Lady Crusaders played a ball forward from the midfield to a wide open
Christina Salmon. Salmon raced forward to the ball and was tackled just inside the 18 yard box by the sliding Blue Raiders keeper setting up a penalty kick for
Karen Vilau who promptly deposited the ball into the back of the net for the game's first goal.
Both teams over the next 30 minutes were getting a feel for the playing conditions and each other's strategies with Carey possessing the ball for the majority of the half. In the 33
rd minute
Zalma Torres found herself on the right side of the field just outside the 18 yard box and played a brilliant cross to the middle of the six yard box to a waiting Salmon who finished it off to give WCU the 2-0 lead.
Lindsey Wilson's best opportunity in the first came off a corner in the 25th minute that was headed towards the goal but was kicked clear by the WCU defense. The final minutes of the first half saw little offensive pressure by either team.
The Blue Raiders came out in the second half with a renewed sense of urgency, pressing the attack from the start and in the 54th minute capitalized on their third corner kick of the match. Silivia Marchesi played the ball into the middle of the six yard box where the ball eventually found the feet of Alexandra Giusti who put the Blue Raiders on the board.
The goal sparked the Carey offensive pressure with them having numerous opportunities but the LWC keeper was up to the challenge, saving three of the attempts with two others narrowly missing to the right. However in the 82nd minute,
Lesley Vasquez played the ball forward to Salmon who beat the defender then dribbled around the LWC keeper for her second goal of the night. The final eight minutes of play saw Carey control the ball eventually running out the clock.
WCU returns to the pitch Friday, September 6, as they head to Foley, Ala. to take on Keiser University. Kick-off is slated for 5:00 pm.
