LEBANON, Tenn. – The William Carey Volleyball Team dropped their first match of the day against Missouri Valley 3-2 but rebounded in the final match of the day to defeat Fisk University 3-1 to wrap up play in the Phoenix Invitational.
Carey jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after taking the first set 25-22 and the second set 25-14. WCU opened up the third set on a 6-1 run but MVC halted the run and eventually tied the set before slowly pulling away to take the set to stay alive.
The fourth set saw both teams go back and forth but with the score tied at 17 all the Vikings closed the set on an 8-4 run to force the deciding fifth set. The fifth saw MVC jump out to a 9-3 lead but the Lady Crusaders settled back in and battled back to tie the set on multiple occasions however, Missouri Valley prevailed in the end.
After trading points to start the match against Fisk, Carey cruised to 25-16 first set victory behind a 7-0 run early on in the set and a 5-0 run to close the set. Things were much closer in the second set, as neither team led by more three points. With the set tied at 22 all, the Lady Crusaders got back to back kills by
Suelen Lima and a Lady Bulldog error to take the 2-0 lead.
The third set saw the same back and forth from both teams but it would be the Lady Bulldogs that prevailed in the end with a 25-19 victory. The fourth set started like the two before it but the Lady Crusaders slowly pulled away to a 17-12 lead and never looked back taking the set 25-17.
WCU is back in action Friday, August 23, as they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to take part in the Faulkner Invitational.
