MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The William Carey Volleyball Team battled to a straight sets victory over Reinhardt University and then cruised to a straight sets victory against Williams Baptist Friday afternoon in the Faulkner Invitational, hosted by Faulkner University.
William Carey swept Reinhardt 3-0 in their opening match of the day, winning 26-24, 25-15, and 25-21. The Lady Crusaders displayed strong form throughout the match, despite a competitive first set where Reinhardt narrowly lost.
The match started with both teams going back and forth but with the score tied at 17 all, the Eagles looked as if they seized control of the set, pulling away to a 21-17 advantage. However, the Lady Crusaders halted the run and went on a 5-0 run of their own. Both teams traded points until an offensive error by RU gave WCU a 25-24 lead and
Marcella Hermont gave Carey the first set win with a kill.
The second set started like the first one ended with both teams trading points. However, with the score tied at six, William Carey went on an 11-2 run and never looked back to take a 2-0 lead. The Lady Crusaders carried the momentum over into the third set building a commanding 18-9 lead. The Eagles however would not quietly, as they battled back to get within one point at 22-21 but the Carey offensive settled back in closing the set on a 4-0 run to secure the victory.
William Carey's defense was a key factor in maintaining their lead throughout the match, while their offensive power came through in crucial moments, particularly in the tightly contested first set.
Suelen Lima led with 14 kills and eight digs while
Katarina Vulic finished with 28 assist and 11 digs.
Carey claimed a dominant 3-0 victory over Williams Baptist to end the first day of the Faulkner Invitational. The Lady Crusaders controlled the match from start to finish, sweeping all three sets 25-8, 25-7, and 25-6 with a solid performance across the board.
The WCU offense hit at a .389% as a team while serving up 11 aces with the defensive knocking down 16 blocks.
Carey is back in action tomorrow, as they take on St. Thomas University at 9:00 am and Freed-Hardeman at 3:00 pm to wrap up play in the Faulkner Invitational.
