Lady Crusaders Fall in Semi-Finals of SUN Conference Tournament

BRADENTON, Fla. – The William Carey Beach Volleyball Team fell in the semi-finals of the SUN Conference Tournament, picking up wins over Warner University and St. Andrews.
 
The Lady Crusaders opened up the tournament with a 3-2 win over Warner University.  Marcella Hermont and Amy Wright picked up the first point with a 21-19, 25-23 win at flight two.  Lia Ramos Bonilla and Barbara Guedes followed with a 21-12, 21-17 win in flight four to put Carey up 2-0.
 
However, the Royals would take the points in flight five and three to tie the match at two all.  The match would come down to flight one and the duo of Elaina Anderson and Gabriela Maceira.  The pair would drop the first set 21-15 but battled to a 21-19 win in set two to force the deciding third set.  Anderson/Maceira wasted no time in the deciding set sealing the victory with a 15-10 win.
 
The next match on Friday would be against #7 Webber International.  The Warriors would take the first point in flight two but WCU would even the match with a thrilling three set win in flight four.  Bonilla and Guedes would take the first set 21-16 but fall in set two 13-21, setting up the deciding third set.  Both pairs went back and forth but in the end it would be Carey that would prevail 18-16 to even the match. 
 
Both teams would once again trade points with Maycee Gross and Jacey Garriga taking the point in flight five 21-19, 21-15 and Warner taking the point in flight three.  Once again it would come down to flight one pair of Anderson and Maceira.  The duo would take set one 21-18 but fall 19-21 in set two.  Is the deciding third set both pairs went back and forth but in the end it would be the Royals that would the set 15-13 and the match.
 
On Saturday, the Lady Crusaders would face-off against and wasted no time in securing the win.  Bonilla and Guedes would take the first point with a 17-21, 21-17, 15-13 win in flight four.  Hermont and Wright would make it 2-0 WCU with a 21-11, 21-12 win in flight two.  Anderson and Maceira would seal the match with a 21-8, 21-19 win flight one sending the Lady Crusaders to the semi-finals.
 
In the semi-finals, Carey would fall to #5 Ave Maria University 3-0.
 
WCU is back in action Thursday, April 11, as they travel to Thibodaux, La. to take on NCAA opponent Nicholls.  First serve is scheduled for 10:00 am.
