GULF SHORES, Ala. – Lady Crusaders fall to Webber International 3-2 in the semi-finals of the SUN Conference Beach Volleyball Championship.
Carey got the championship underway taking care of business against Truett McConnell on Friday morning.
Elaina Anderson and
Lia Ramos Bonilla picked up the first point with a 21-16, 21-12 win in flight four.
Barbara Guedes and
Gabriela Maceira made it 2-0, winning 21-18, 21-10 in flight two and the duo of
Suelen Lima and
Amy Wright sealed the win with a 21-8, 21-19 win in flight three.
WCU then turned their attention to Mobile. UM took the first point, winning flight four, but Guedes and Maceira evened the match with a thrilling 21-17, 22-24, 15-13 victory in flight two.
The Rams retook the lead with a win in flight one but again the Lady Crusaders tied the match, as
Maycee Gross and
Sofia Bettini battled to a 21-19, 12-21, 16-14 win in flight five. The match would come down to Emma Hampton and Gabby Sheffield of Mobile and Lima and Wright of WCU. Lima/Wright took the first set 21-12 but dropped the second set 21-14. Things went back and forth in the deciding third set but in the end, it was the Rams that would prevail 15-13 to clinch the win.
With the loss, the Lady Crusaders dropped to the losers where they would face off against TMU once again this time on Saturday morning with the winner advancing to the semifinals. Just like in their meeting on Friday, Carey took care of business, advancing to the semifinals with a 3-0 win.
Guedes and Maceira picked up the first point with a 21-19, 21-15 win in flight two. Anderson and Bonilla were the next to claim a point, winning in three sets 21-16, 18-21, 15-10 in flight four with
Marcella Hermont and
Lara Monteiro sealing the victory with a 21-16, 21-14 win in flight one.
In the semis, Webber took the first point with a win in flight four and made it 2-0 with a win in flight two. However, Bettini and Gross kept the Lady Crusaders alive with a 21-9, 21-17 victory in flight five.
Hermont and Monteiro followed, tying the match with a 21-15, 21-16 victory in flight one. The Warriors though would end the comeback with a win in flight three to advance to the championship match.
