HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Beach Volleyball Team returned to the sand after a two week break and split a SUN conference double header, defeating St. Andrews 3-2 but falling to Truett-McConnell 3-2, Saturday afternoon at the USM Beach Courts.
Against the Knights, the Lady Crusaders took the early lead winning flight four and flight two.
Amy Wright and
Lainey Brumfield went back in forth in the first set but came out ahead in the end 23-21. In the second set they wasted no time in securing the point, winning the set 21-14.
The duo of
Elaina Anderson and
Gabriela Maceira took care of business in set one winning 21-16 but in set two things went back and forth for a while until Anderson/Maceira pulled away to take set 21-18. However, SAU would even things up with wins in flight one and flight five.
The pairing of
Barbara Guedes and
Lia Ramos Bonilla would leave little doubt, as they secured the win for WCU with a 21-14,21-11 win at flight three.
TMU would take the first point in the second match with a win in flight one but Wright and Brumfield would even the match at one point apiece with a thrilling 23-21 win in set one and a 21-13 win in set two.
The Lady Crusaders would take a 2-1 lead on a three set win by Anderson and Maceira (19-21,21-13,15-13) in flight two. However, the Bears would take the point in flight one, leaving flight three as the deciding match.
TMU would take the first set 21-12 but Carey would not go quietly battling to the end but it would be the Bears that would come out ahead in the end 25-23.
Carey is back in action Friday, March 22, as they travel to Mobile, Ala. to take on Southeastern (Fla.) and Webber International.
