CAMPBELLSVILE, Ky. – The William Carey Women's Basketball Team season came to an end, as they fell to Campbellsville 82-73 Saturday afternoon in the 2
nd round of the NAIA Women's Basketball Championship.
"We played our hearts out today," said Head Coach
Tracy English. "Just came up a little short in the end. Proud of our kids. We stood toe to toe with the number 3 team in the country."
The Lady Crusaders found themselves trailing for the majority of the game, going into halftime down 38-30. The Tigers would go on to extend their by as 17 points midway through the third however the Lady Crusaders halted the run and closed the quarter on a 16-2 run to get within three at 56-53.
Carey would tie the game to open the fourth on a
Lauren Rowley three pointer but Campbellsville would go on to pull away again, taking a 68-58 lead with just under six minutes remaining. Carey would not go down without a fight and once again battled their way back behind a 10-0 run to tie the game at 68 with three minutes to play. But Campbellsville however would go on to take the lead for good on a layup by Kayla Luebbe.
Lauren led the offense, as she tied a career high in points with 28 with
Rose Warren and
Leah Sutton each finishing with 12 points.
Carey finishes the season with an overall record 22-5.
"It's been a special year," said English. "We won a regular season championship and played into the 2nd round of the National Tournament. I can't be prouder of this close group of ladies."
