MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The William Carey Women's Basketball Team survived a late rally to defeat Brewton-Parker College 69-62 Thursday night at Gillis Gym.
The Lady Crusaders got off to a good start building a 10 -3 lead midway through the first only to see the Barons storm back to tie the game at 10. WCU halted the run and answered with an 8-0 run but BPC would close the first quarter with four straight points to cut the deficit to 18-14.
Carey continued their strong shooting in the second quarter, building a double digit lead on multiple occasions before taking a 35-26 lead into the break.
Brewton-Parker came out the break cutting the deficit to single digits multiple times but each time the Lady Crusaders answered pushing their lead back into double figures before taking a 53-43 lead into the final quarter of play.
Just like in the third quarter, the Barons kept at it, eventually chipping away at the Carey lead to make it 57-55 WCU with under five minutes to play. However, that would be as close as the Barons would get, as back to back baskets by
Shaneal Corpuz and
Kolten Blakeney pushed the WCU lead back to six and the Lady Crusaders defense would take care of the rest to preserve the win.
Shaneal Corpuz led the offense with her eighth double double of the season with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
Kolten Blakeney finished with 12 points and nine rebounds while
Madelyn Ladner added 12 points.
WCU is back in action Saturday, as they travel to Cochran, Ga. to take on Middle Georgia State in SSAC action. Tip-off is slated for 11:00 am.
