HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Women's Basketball Team returned to action with an 83-64 victory over SSAC foe Faulkner University Thursday night at Clinton Gym.
The Lady Crusaders got off to a quick start, as
Rose Warren opened the game with a three pointer and after a block by
Kolten Blakeney led to a layup from
Jenna Garriga, Blakeney made it 7-0 on a jumper two minutes in. However, the Eagles countered with a 9-0 run over a two-minute span and from there both teams traded points.
Faulkner eventually built a 21-16 lead with three to play but Carey fought their way back over the next minute, retaking the lead 22-21 on a
Madelyn Ladner layup. Over the final two minutes WCU missed their offensive chances allowing the Eagles to take a 24-22 lead into the second quarter.
After trading baskets to open the second quarter, Faulkner went on to build a 35-30 lead with six minutes remaining. Over the next three minutes both teams struggled on the offensive end with the Eagles breaking the scoring drought on a layup to make it a seven-point lead.
The WCU offense also broke their drought on a
Mckalea Randall three pointer followed by a Blakeney layup to get within two. Faulkner answered with a three pointer of their own with Ladner making one of two free throws to send game into the break with the Eagles leading 40-36.
Carey came out of the break and quickly erased the deficit, as
Leah Sutton,
Shaneal Corpuz, Blakeney, and Warren combined for ten points to put WCU back in front 46-43 with six minutes left. Garriga drained a three-point basket followed by a Sutton jumper to push the Lady Crusaders lead to eight. From there the Carey offense was firing on all cylinders, as they pulled away to a 58-49 lead over the final minutes of the quarter.
The Lady Crusaders kept up the attack in the fourth and stretched their lead to the largest of the night at 73-52 on a Garriga three pointer with seven to play. From there Carey cruised to the 19-point victory.
Kolten Blakeney led the way finishing with 18 points and 16 rebounds with
Shaneal Corpuz having 13 points.
Jenna Garriga added 12 points while
Rose Warren and
