HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Women's Basketball Team picked up a non-conference win over NCAA Division II opponent Spring Hill College, defeating the Badgers 65-46 Saturday afternoon at Clinton Gym.
"I thought the game was pretty sloppy the first half on our offensive side," said Head Coach
Tracy English. "Rose was able to get some clean looks at the basket for us to keep us close until we got into a rhythm. I thought we were really good on the defensive end all day."
After an opening basket by
Rose Warren, back-to-back buckets by
Kolten Blakeney made it 6-2 Carey with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter. SHC answered with baskets by Ella Vallas and Marta Duda, but
Shaneal Corpuz and
Jenna Garriga countered with five straight points to put Carey in front with under five to play. Over the final minutes, both teams traded points, but the Badgers closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 15 heading into the second quarter.
After a sluggish start by both teams that saw two minutes pass before a basket was made which was by Spring Hill to give the Badgers their first lead of the game. The lead was short lived, as Warren scored five straight points to put Carey back in front 20-17 with six minutes remaining. SHC quickly tied it up on a three pointer by Claudia Garrido, but Warren continued her scoring streak with eight more points with Corpuz making it 30-20 WCU before going into the half leading 34-22.
The hot shooting continued coming out of the break, as five different Lady Crusades combined for a 12-0 run to open the third to make it a 24-point advantage with four minutes remaining. From there Carey maintained the lead taking a 52-31 lead into the final quarter of play. It was much of the same in the fourth quarter, as WCU pushed their lead to as many as 23 points on their way to victory.
Rose Warren led the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds with
Madelyn Ladner adding ten points.
Carey returns to action Thursday, December 19, as they return to SSAC play against Blue Mountain Christian. Play is set to begin at 5:30 pm at Clinton Gym.
