Lady Crusaders Defeat Dillard in Non-Conference Action

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Volleyball Team picked up a non-conference win Monday night, defeating Dillard University 3-1, at the Ben Waddle Complex.

After trading points at the start of the match, the Lady Crusaders used a 5-0 run to take a 10-6 advantage. After giving up two points, Carey seized control of the set with a 7-0 run this time to pull away for good before closing the set on another 7-0 run for the 25-10 victory.

The second set started like the first one ended with WCU pulling away behind a 9-3 run. From there, the Lady Crusaders extended their lead, eventually taking the set 25-15 and a 2-0 lead. The third set was nothing like the first two, as both teams went back and forth from the start. With the set tied at eight all the Bleu Devils slowly started to pull away using an 8-3 run. Carey managed to get back within two points but would get no closer, as Dillard pulled away once again to take the set 25-18 and avoid the sweep.

The battle continued in the fourth set with each team looking for the spark they needed. With the Lady Crusaders holding a slim 13-12 lead, they found the spark they were looking for in the form of an 8-0 run and never looked back, taking the set 25-16 and the match.

Suelen Lima led the way offensively with 15 kills and 12 digs. Sofia Bettini added 12 kills and four aces while Barbara Guedes had ten kills. Katarina Vulic finished the match with 41 assists with Gabriela Maceira having 14 digs. Finishing one kill short of ten was Elaina Anderson but with those nine kills, she surpassed 1,000 kills in her career.

Carey is back in action Friday, October 18, as they return to conference play against Life University. Play is set to get underway at 6:00 pm at the Ben Waddle Complex.
