Lady Crusaders Overcome Third Set Struggles to Defeat Life

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Volleyball Team returned to SSAC action with a straight sets victory over Life University Friday night at the Ben Waddle Complex.

The Lady Crusaders got off to a hot start in the first set, thanks to fourteen kills and two aces, which allowed Carey to jump out to an early 12-2 lead and they never looked back, taking the set 25-17. In the second set, WCU got three straight kills from Sofia Bettini and one from Elaina Anderson to take an early 4-2 lead.

From there things remained tight until the Lady Crusaders went on a 5-0 run to pull away to an 11-6 advantage but the Running Eagles managed to cut the deficit to two at 12-10. However, Carey kept up the attack, eventually pulling away for good behind a 5-1 run before going on to take the set 25-17.

It looked as if WCU had things well in hand in the third set, opening on a 9-2 run, but once again Life battled their way back this time tying the set at thirteen all. Carey responded with three straight points, but the Running Eagles countered with a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the set.

Trailing 21-17, the Lady Crusaders dug deep, picking up four straight points on three kills by Marcella Hermont and one from Suelen Lima to tie the set once again. Both teams traded the next couple of points and an attack error by Life gave WCU a 24-23 lead. Needing just the one point to complete the sweep, it would be Elaina Anderson that provided the point with her seventh kill of the match to seal the victory.

Marcella Hermont led the attack finishing with twelve kills. Suelen Lima added eleven kills with Sofia Bettini having ten kills. Katarina Vulic picked up 34 assists while Gabriela Maceira had 23 digs.

Carey is back in action tomorrow, as they take on Point University in conference action. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 pm at the Ben Waddle Complex.
