Lady Crusaders Win in Dramatic Seven Goal Thriller

FOLEY, Ala. - #3 William Carey Women's Soccer outlasted #5 Keiser University 4-3 Friday evening at the Foley Sports Complex, defeating the Seahawks on a penalty kick in the final minute of play.

Things started off with Mariangela Jimenez getting a great opportunity in the opening minutes but could not capitalize.  From their Keiser took control, possessing the ball for most of the first half and in the 29th minute they took a 1-0 lead.

Hana Masuko played a ball forward to Ramona Kannady who then beat a Carey defender to set up a one on one with the Crusader keeper.  Anita Gudmundsdottir initially came up with the save but the loose ball took a lucky bounce to find its way into the net.

KU would take the one goal lead into the second half until Christina Salmon wrestled the ball away from a Seahawk defender in the 47th minute and slotted the ball into an empty net.  For the next 30 minutes the action was dialed down but over the final 15 minutes of play things would get interesting.

William Carey would get things started with Maria Azarias playing a ball to Alyssia Davis down the left side. Davis would then cut inside on to her right foot and curl a wonderful effort over the KU goalkeeper into the top right corner to give WCU the lead.

The lead was short lived, as Keiser hit back immediately with a goal less than a minute later.  The Seahawks would eventually retake the lead in the 85th minute, as Viki Adam fired a shot from outside the 18 yard box into the top left corner of the goal to take a 3-2 lead.

However, it was the Lady Crusaders turn to strike back immediately, as Salmon was fouled inside the box in the 86th minute to give Carey a chance to equalize.  Azarias then stepped up to take the penalty kick and quickly sent the KU keeper diving the wrong way, depositing the ball into the back of the net to even things at three all.

Two minutes later it was déjà vu for the Seahawk keeper, as Salmon was once again taken down inside the box giving WCU another PK.  Azarias again took center stage, to take what would be the deciding kick of the game.  Just like before, Azarias sent the Keiser keeper the wrong way for the winning goal.

WCU is back in action Sunday, as they take Southeastern University (Fla.).  Kick-off is slated for 1:00 pm at the Foley Sports Complex.
