Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lady Crusaders Cruise Past Southeastern (Fla.)

FOLEY, Ala. - #3 William Carey Women's Soccer picked up their second win over a team in the NAIA Top 25, defeating Southeastern (Fla.) 5-1, Sunday afternoon at the Foley Sports Complex.

The Lady Crusaders opened the game with some good opportunities but could not capitalize.  SEU however made the most of theirs with a goal in the 20th minute.  The Carey offense continued to attack and in the 39th minute finally broke through.

Alexis Arnoult played a ball from the backfield to Alyssia Davis who then drove down the field, beat a Fire defender and fired a shot past the Southeastern keeper to even things up. Just as the game looked like it would head into the break tied, Natasha Povey stole the ball at midfield and played a brilliant ball to Virginia Mesa with only seconds remaining on the clock.  Mesa then drove down the field past the Southeastern defenders and firing a shot to the bottom right corner of the goal to give WCU a 2-1 lead heading into the break.

The Lady Crusaders continued to press the attack and in the 63rd minute, Julia Herbst played a header to Maria Azarias who dribbled around a defender then took aim at the top left corner of the goal to make it 3-1.  The WCU offense was not done and in the 76th minute Kristina Decker played a long ball to Zalma Torres who then raced past the Southeastern defender and tapped the ball past the keeper.  In the final minute of play Torres drove down the right side then crossed the ball to Mesa in front of the goal who then netted the final goal of the match.

The Lady Crusaders are back in action Thursday, September 14, as they travel to Thomasville, Ga. to take on Thomas University in their SSAC opener.  Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
