COCHRAN, Ga. – #1 William Carey Women's Soccer left little to doubt Thursday evening, defeating Middle Georgia State 10-1 in SSAC play.
Despite having some early looks, the Lady Crusaders found themselves down 1-0, as MGA netted a goal in the ninth minute. However, WCU answered with six goals to take a 6-1 lead into the break. In the 14
th minute,
Maria Azarias found
Lauren Jones on the right side who then fired it home from 15 yards out to even things up.
A minute later, Mariiangela Jimenez fired a shot from the top of the 18 yard bod box into the bottom left corner of the goal to make it 2-1 Carey. The Lady Crusaders would make it 3-1 in the 16
th minute,
Alexis Arnoult played a ball at midfield to Jimenez who then drove down the left side and sent a shot to the right corner of the goal.
Arnoult added the fourth goal for WCU sending a shot past the Knight keeper in the 25
th minute. Jimenez would complete the hat trick in the 31
st minute with the final goal of the half coming from Arnoult in the 38
th minute.
Things were much calmer in the second half but in the 52
nd minute Azarias played a free kick into the box where
Julia Herbst was waiting to tap it in. In the 75
th minute,
Alyssia Davis drove down the field and was awarded a PK as she was tackled inside the box.
Virginia Mesa would step up to take the PK and wasted no time making it 8-1 WCU. In the 85
th minute
Natasha Povey crossed a ball in front of the goal to Mesa who then tapped it in with the final goal of the match coming in the final minute off the foot of
Zalma Torres.
Carey is back in action Saturday, as they take on Brewton-Parker in conference action. Kick-off is slated for 12:30 pm.
