MONTGOMERY, Ala. - #1 William Carey Women's Soccer cruised into the finals of the SSAC Women's Soccer Championship with a 7-0 victory over Thomas University Wednesday morning at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex.
Â
Just six minutes in,
Julia Herbst drives towards the goal then flicks the ball to a wide open
Karen Vilau who tapped it in to make 1-0 Carey. Two minutes later
Christina Salmon made it 2-0 WCU on an unbelievable shot from the right side putting the ball just inside the post and under the crossbar. The Lady Crusaders kept the attack going and in the 11
th minute
Maria Azarias' shot bounced off the left post right to the feet of Herbst who quickly deposited the ball into the back of the net.Â
Â
William Carey stretched their lead to four in the 29
th minute, as Herbst beat a Nighthawk defender then fired with her left past the Thomas keeper. The final goal of the half would come from
Mariangela Jimenez as she collected the ball from
Lauren Jones then drove up the middle of the field and fired into the right side of the goal from 25 yards out.
Â
The second half did not quite see the offensive output as the first but the Lady Crusaders would pick up goals in the 53
rd minute and 63
rd minute by Vilau for the final margin. The Carey defense did the rest holding Thomas to just four shots for the game and none in the second half.
Â
Carey is back in action Friday as they take on the winner out of UT-Southern and Life University. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex.
