FOLEY, Ala. – For the seventh time in eight seasons, #1 William Carey Women's Soccer advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Championship with a 1-0 victory over Keiser University Monday morning, at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.
The first half saw both teams with their opportunities but unable to connect sending the game into the break scoreless. The Lady Crusaders saw their best chances in the eighth minute on a shot from
Karen Vilau but Seahawk keeper Zara Board was there for the save and in the 23
rd minute but once again Board was there to save the shot from
Mariangela Jimenez.
Keiser saw their opportunities in the 31
st minute, as Ramona Kannady worked her way into the box but
Chloe Strickland was in the right position to block the shot and in the 36
th minute, as Viki Adam found herself one on one with the Carey keeper and fired on net, but
Marlen Kelm made a one handed diving save to keep the game scoreless going into the half.
William Carey finally broke through in the 56
th minute, as
Maria Azarias beat a KU defender, then with a right-footed shot snuck it just inside the near post to give Carey the 1-0 lead. The Lady Crusaders nearly scored again in the 66th minute, but the shot from
Christina Salmon would bounce off the post.
The WCU defense would continue to do their job, keeping the Seahawks offense off balance but Keiser would get their final chance in the 82
nd minute as Olivia Pousette got on the end of a cross, but Helm trapped the ball between her legs to hold on to the shutout.
William Carey is back in action Thursday, November 30, as they take on Aquinas College (Mich.). Kick-off is scheduled for 10:00 am at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.
