FOLEY, Ala. - #1 William Carey Women's Soccer will be heading to the final four for the sixth time in seven years with a 3-2 victory over Aquinas College Thursday morning at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.
The Lady Crusaders had some early chances but could not break through the Saints defense that held opponents scoreless in 16 contests on the year. However, the half would not go scoreless, as Aquinas would take a 1-0 lead on a goal in the 28
th minute. Just as it looked like Carey would go into the break down a goal,
Maria Azarias would convert a free kick in the 44
th minute to tie the game heading into halftime.
The Saints quickly retook the lead coming of the break with a goal in the 54
th minute. The WCU offense continued to take their chances and in the 70
th minute Azarias once again came through capitalizing on a free kick to tie game once again. With time winding down it looked as if overtime would be needed to decide a winner.Â
However, the Lady Crusaders had other plans, as
Mariangela Jimenez drove the left side of the of the field and made a brilliant cross to
Christina Salmon right in front of the goal who then flicked it to the right post for what would be the game winner.
WCU is back in action Saturday, December 2, as they take on the winner of UT-Southern and Central Methodist. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 pm at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.
