Lady Crusaders Take Down Mobile in Five Set Thriller

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Volleyball Team defeated the University of Mobile in a five set thriller, Thursday night at the Ben Waddle Complex.

Things went back and forth to start the match. With Carey leading 11-8, they took control of the set using a 7-1 run and never looked backed, taking the set 25-15.  Things were much of the same in the second set but this time it would be Mobile that would pull away to a 14-8 lead.  However, WCU battled back to cut the deficit to 18-17 but the Rams shut down the rally closing the set on a 7-2 run to even things up.

The battle continued in the third set with both teams trading shots at the beginning.  But just like the second set UM pulled away to a 12-7 advantage. The Lady Crusaders once again answered to even the set at 14 all.  However, a 6-1 run by the Rams proved the difference, as Mobile would go on to take the set 25-17.

After going back and forth at the start of the fourth set, Carey slowly pulled away, building a 14-9 advantage.  Just as it looked as if WCU had control of the set leading 17-14, the Rams battled back, taking a 20-18 lead.  From there both teams took turns with the lead.  With UM holding a 24-23 lead, the Lady Crusaders dug deep and rallied for three straight points to take the set 26-24 and force the deciding fifth set.

Carey carried that momentum into the fifth set, building an 8-5 lead and never looked backed taking the set 15-8 and the match.

Elaina Anderson led the attack finishing with 17 kills and 15 digs. Barbara Guedes added 11 kills and 11 digs with Grace Engels finishing with 10 kills and 10 digs.  Lia Romas Bonilla had 42 assists and 16 digs while Laura Almeida adding 15 digs.

WCU is back in action Saturday, as they take on Stillman College in SSAC action.  First serve is slated for 1:00 pm at the Ben Waddle Complex.
