BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The William Carey volleyball team opened up their 2022 season Friday afternoon, with wins over (RV) Lindsey Wilson and UT-Southern in the Vette City Classic, hosted by Lindsey Wilson.
In their first match of the day, WCU and LWC traded points in the first set, until the Lady Crusaders used an 11-3 run to pull away and take the set 25-21. Carey kept up the tempo in the second set jumping out to a 6-1 advantage. However, the Blue Raiders halted the run with a 7-1 run of their own to take the lead.  With the set tied at 23 all LWC got back to back kills to even the match at one set apiece.
WCU started quickly in the third set opening with an 11-4 run and never looked back taking the set 25-18 and a 2-1 lead. Lindsey Wilson came out strong in the fourth set taking an early 9-6 lead. The Lady Crusaders fought back and took the set 25-21 and the match.
Against UT-Southern, Carey got off to rocky start, dropping the first set 25-14. WCU regrouped in the second set, as both teams went back and forth until the Lady Crusaders closed the set on a 15-6 run to even the match.
In the third set with Carey holding a slim lead halfway through the set, WCU once again found the spark they needed closing the set on an 8-4 run to go up 2-1. Â In the fourth set the Lady Crusaders used a 9-1 run to take a 17-9 lead before going on to take the set 25-18 and the match.
WCU is back in action today as they wrap up play in the Vette City Classic against Brescia University at 4:30 pm.Â
