Coach Phillip “PJ” McCray returns for his 10th season as WCU Men’s Basketball Assistant.
Since joining the staff, in 2014, PJ has played a tremendous role in helping the Crusaders to a total of 173 wins.
PJ serves as the Recruiting Coordinator, Skills Development Coach, and Strength and Conditioning Coach for WCU Men’s Basketball. In the 2017-18 season, he was recognized by CoachStat.Net as a “Diamond in the Rough” for small colleges.
PJ has helped lead the Crusaders to 4 SSAC Regular Championships (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019) and 4 NAIA National Tournament appearances (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019) which includes the Fab Four run in 2019. Under his assistance, WCU has also collected 2 wins versus Division I programs and 2 more against Division II’s.
In addition to assisting with Varsity, PJ is also the Head Coach of the WCU Men’s JV Basketball team. He takes pride in the development of players and having the opportunity of helping them move up to help the big team. Over the past eight seasons, 17 players have started off on the JV team, moved up, and contributed to the varsity.
PJ is a graduate of Southwest Mississippi Community College (A.A.- 2011), and William Carey University (B.S.- 2013, M.Ed.- 2014). He received multiple academic awards (Dean’s List), as well as athletic awards along the way.
PJ has been married to his wife Nikki for over 5 years and they have a one year old daughter, Milli.
