MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Crusaders suffered their first loss of the season Saturday afternoon, falling 2-0 to Faulkner University.
Faulkner controlled much of the opening half, outshooting Carey 11-3 and placing seven shots on goal. The Eagles struck early in the eighth minute when Bernardo Juca found the back of the net to give Faulkner a 1-0 advantage.
The Crusader defense regrouped after the early goal, turning away several Faulkner scoring opportunities to keep the deficit at one. However, the Eagles broke through again in the 31st minute, adding a second goal to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Carey showed renewed energy after the break, increasing its attacking pressure while tightening up defensively. The Crusaders held Faulkner to just two shots on goal in the second half and generated six shots on frame after recording only two in the opening 45 minutes.
Despite the improved effort, Carey was unable to break through against the Eagles' defense, as Faulkner held on for the 2-0 victory.
The Crusaders return to action Friday, Sept. 25, when they travel to Marietta, Ga., to face Life University. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
