SHREVEPORT, La. – The Jack Hartley era got off to a winning start as the William Carey University women's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over LSU Shreveport on Thursday afternoon at The Swamp.
The Lady Crusaders controlled possession throughout the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Pilots 12-1 and holding a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Despite the dominant performance, Carey was unable to break through until the 28th minute. An indirect free kick from four yards out by Livia Pertl finally put the Lady Crusaders on the scoreboard and gave WCU a 1-0 lead.
The second half followed a similar script, with Carey continuing to dictate play. The Lady Crusaders doubled their lead in the 61st minute when Paola Alvarez sent a ball into the box. The Pilots' goalkeeper attempted to intercept the pass but was unable to secure it, allowing Luana Falconeri to tap the loose ball into the open net.
Less than a minute later, Carey was awarded a penalty kick following a handball in the box. Falconeri converted the opportunity for her second goal of the match, extending the lead to 3-0.
From there, the Lady Crusaders remained in control, limiting LSU Shreveport to just four second-half shots while generating 14 of their own. Carey finished the match with a commanding 26-5 advantage in shots.
The Lady Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, Aug. 25, when they travel to West Palm Beach, Fla., to face Keiser University. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
