MOBILE, Ala.- the top seeded Crusader Men's Tennis team captured their sixth all-time SSAC Tournament Championship today with a 4-0 victory over Loyola (New Orleans). The Crusaders, ranked 6
th in the NAIA Top 25, defeated Abraham Baldwin 4-0 yesterday in an SSAC semi-final matchup.
Carey and the Wolfpack of Loyola, the one and two overall seeds, were matching up today for the second time in just over a week. The Crusaders clinched the SSAC Regular Season Championship with a 7-0 sweep of the Wolfpack in the last meeting. Today wasn't much different.
Carey claimed the doubles point with victories in the first and third slots.
Vinh Nguyen and
Jean Nicolas Leblanc won their match 6-3 while
Simon Muntwyler and
Artur Ibragimov won theirs 6-3
. Islam Orynbassar and
Phil Louis Steinbichler were leading their set when the clincher was made.
The Crusaders swept the 4-6 singles slots to clinch the championship. Ibragimov won his match (6-2, 6-3), Muntwyler won his (6-4, 6-0), and Steinbichler polished things off with a 6-4, 6-1 win to seal the championship. Nguyen was leading his match 7-5, 4-1 and Leblanc was leading his 6-2, 1-6, 4-1 when the clincher was made.
Carey (12-0) now awaits their next opponent at the NAIA National Championship in Mobile, Alabama. The selection show will be held on April 28
th. The NAIA Tournament will run from May 12
th to May 16
th.
