HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Sixth-ranked William Carey turned in a dominant showing Wednesday afternoon, sweeping No. 24 Loyola University 7–0 to capture its fifth consecutive SSAC Regular Season title and sixth overall.
With the victory, the Crusaders improved to 9–1 on the season, while Loyola fell to 6–4 overall.
William Carey seized control early by sweeping all three doubles matches in convincing fashion.
Vinh Nguyen and
Jean Nicolas Leblanc set the tone with a 6–1 victory at No. 1 doubles, followed by Louis Steinbichler and
Islam Orynbassar's 6–2 win at the second spot to clinch the doubles point. Carey completed the sweep when
Artur Ibragimov and
Simon Muntwyler posted a 6–2 decision at No. 3 doubles.
The momentum carried seamlessly into singles play, where the Crusaders claimed all six matches in straight sets. Nguyen rolled to a 6–3, 6–0 victory over Sam Izrael at No. 1 singles, while Orynbassar added a 6–1, 6–4 win at the No. 2 position. Ibragimov and Leblanc followed with solid victories at the third and fourth spots to keep Carey rolling.
William Carey closed out the sweep with Muntwyler edging Luca Abati 7–6, 6–3 at No. 5 singles, and Steinbichler taking the point at No. 6 with a 6–4, 7–5 win.
The Crusaders return to action Sunday, April 12, when they travel to New Orleans, La., to face Xavier University in non-conference play.
