HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Lady Crusaders delivered a dominant performance Thursday night at Danny Owens Field, cruising to an 8-0 victory over Point University.
Carey controlled the match from the opening whistle, outshooting the Skyhawks 13-1 in the first half. Despite the offensive pressure, the Lady Crusaders were unable to break through until the 28th minute.
Luana Falconeri delivered a perfectly weighted cross to
Sara Aguirre, who needed just one touch to put the ball in the back of the net and give Carey a 1-0 lead. The goal opened the floodgates for the Lady Crusaders.
Five minutes later,
Mia Encinia used a deft backheel pass to set up
Livia Pertl, who finished into the top corner to double the advantage. In the 36th minute,
Maddie Davis sent a long ball into the attacking third that found
Paloma Paris inside the box. Paris finished with one touch into the bottom corner, sending Carey into halftime with a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Lady Crusaders wasted little time extending the margin after the break.
Raquel Batalla Royo beat her defender inside the box and calmly placed her shot just inside the post to make it 4-0. Moments later, a Point defensive miscue resulted in an own goal in the 48th minute, pushing the Carey lead to 5-0.
After a brief lull in the attack,
Linda Mustered found the top corner in the 65th minute and struck again seven minutes later for her second goal of the match, extending the advantage to 7-0.
Susan De Souza Santos capped the scoring in the 83rd minute, finishing off a brilliant cross from
Sophie Magee to seal the 8-0 victory.
William Carey returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 15, when the Lady Crusaders travel to Pulaski, Tenn., to face UT Southern. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
