BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – The William Carey University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Blue Mountain Christian in Southern States Athletic Conference action Friday night.
The Lady Crusaders built an early advantage in the opening set after a five-point run gave WCU an 11-6 lead. Carey later extended the margin to 16-10 before the Toppers rallied to erase the deficit. Blue Mountain Christian tied the set at 19-19 and closed on a 6-0 run to claim the opener, 25-19.
William Carey responded in the second set. After another closely contested start, the Lady Crusaders used a strong offensive push to create separation and take a 23-18 advantage. WCU maintained control the rest of the way, securing a 25-19 victory to even the match at one set apiece.
Blue Mountain Christian regained momentum in the third set, racing out to a 7-3 lead and later extending its advantage to 17-11. The Toppers continued to control the set and earned a 25-15 win to move back in front, 2-1.
The fourth set remained competitive throughout, with the Lady Crusaders staying within striking distance of the hosts. Trailing by just one point at 20-19, William Carey looked to force a fifth set, but Blue Mountain Christian finished the match with a 5-1 run to claim the set 25-19 and secure the 3-1 victory.
William Carey returns to action Saturday, Oct. 3, when the Lady Crusaders travel to Pulaski, Tenn., to face UT Southern in SSAC play. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
